Located west of downtown Chongqing, on the western bank of the Jialing River, one of the Yangtze River's major branches, the Shapingba District has long been regarded as the city's cultural heart.

Shapingba was built by the Ba Kingdom, during the Zhou Dynasty (1066 to 256BC). With more than 3,000 years of history, the district has a profound cultural legacy.

It officially became a district of Chongqing in 1939, and was first named Shaci.
