Dengue: A silent killer
|
If Southeast Asia's performance in tackling the dengue virus is
anything to go by, one can expect avian influenza to be around in the
region for a long time to come.
Dengue, also known as hemorrhagic fever, has already claimed more
than 1,000 lives in Southeast Asia this year while avian influenza,
which has killed 62 people in Viet Nam (41), Thailand (12), Indonesia
(6) and Cambodia (3) over the past three years, is drawing a good
deal more international attention.
The reason is obvious. Avian influenza is the new plague on the
block, and has the potential to blossom into a global epidemic ...
