Thomas Cole: Both Sides Now

It is easy to regard the painter Thomas Cole (1801-1848) as an artist torn in two.

Look at half of what he left us - those fine and stirring landscapes, mostly of the Catskills - and the fellow seems a prophet, an initiating seer, whose deep love of the out-of-doors flows like some great river through later American art.

But the other half of Cole is a bit of an embarrassment. What are we to do with his moralizing fantasies - that child in the golden boat, that white translucent castle hovering in the air? Many have been tempted to put them in the closet, as if they didn't count, ...
