Purchases Put Corcoran `Back on Track'; Bierstadt Sketches, Powers Bust Complement Gallery's Collection

The Corcoran Gallery of Art happily announced yesterday that it had successfully bid $80,000 at Sotheby's, New York, to acquire three oil sketches by Albert Bierstadt and a white marble bust by Hiram Powers. All relate to two major American icons in the Corcoran's permanent collection: Bierstadt's painting "Last of the Buffalo" and Powers's famous marble nude sculpture "Greek Slave." With the 15 percent buyer's commission the total price was $92,000.
