Baltic state weighs benefits and ills of EU membership
|
RIGA, Latvia: Latvians are expected to make their country the last
of 10 candidates to approve membership in the European Union on
Saturday, but unlike the vote in its Baltic neighbours, the margin of
victory is expected to be narrow.
Voters in the ex-Soviet republic of 2.4 million people are likely
to approve membership, but not by the strong margins neighbouring
Estonia and Lithuania did, observers said.
Along with Estonia, Latvia has been pegged as one of the most
sceptical candidates for EU-membership. Most Latvian opinion polls
show voters in favour of membership, with between 55 and 65 ...
