BAGHDAD: Abu Sameh has been watching helplessly from his postcard stall at al-Rashid street in the heart of the Iraqi capital crumbles.

The Ottoman era thoroughfare lined with Grecian columns was for decades the showcase of Baghdad's culture and economy.

Today many offices on al-Rashid are empty and famous cafes have gone out of business. The art-deco and rococo buildings dating from the 1920s fell into decay years ago.
