Iodized salt remains out of reach for many Chinese

Despite great efforts in the last decade, nearly 10 per cent of Chinese still lack access to iodized salt and are therefore at risk of suffering iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), officials said.

IDD can cause miscarriages, premature births, mental retardation and goiter.

Official surveys show that more than 88 per cent of the country's 1.3 billion people now use iodized salt, which experts say is the most economic and effective way to prevent IDD.
