The soon-to-be Horse of the Year was retired last Monday simply because he is too valuable to risk. A.P. Indy has been sent to the 1,800-acre Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky., to stand at stud, and once again, the sport of thoroughbred racing has lost a star just as he was on the verge of becoming a household name.

This is a tough part of the business. Enormous effort is made by the racing industry to promote 3-year-olds of great ability, but as often as not, as soon as they are familiar to the average fan, they are taken out of action by their owners.
