William A. Roche, a retired Woburn High School teacher and World War II commander, died Friday at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport after suffering a heart attack. He was 81 and lived in Seabrook, N.H.

Born in Woburn, Mr. Roche was a 1929 graduate of Woburn High School, where he was captain of the hockey and track teams. In 1934, he graduated from Boston College. He later earned a master's degree in education from Calvin Coolidge College and did further studies at Boston University and Salem State College.
