We're sailing on a sea of cowardice

Five hundred years ago this morning, Christopher Columbus had a
problem.
It was not his ship; the Santa Maria didn't sail very fast, but
everything worked. It was the rudder on the Pinta. Discovering the
westward passage to India would have to wait. The stubborn,
headstrong, mistake-prone mariner took his little three-vessel fleet
into the Canary Islands.
The Pinta's balky rudder was not the first case on record of a
government being gypped by a contractor. That honor probably goes to
the Babylonian merchant who conned Hammurabi into buying a defective
mallet.
