NEW YORK -- Hewlett-Packard Co. said it has developed a cartridge for its desktop computer printers that allows them to produce checks in special magnetic ink required by banks.

HP says the toner cartridge, combined with a special font it will sell for its laser printers, will do the same job as special check printers costing $10,000 or more.
