On a sultry summer afternoon, the World Discoverer slowly pulled away from its port in Bali, heading east. Our sleek and sturdy cruise ship was bound for seven islands known to few Americans and visited by even fewer.

Sumba, Sawu, Lomblen, Alor, Flores, Satonda and Komodo are household names primarily to the scant and indigenous populations of these distant Indonesian islands, strung like irregular beads about 600 miles south of the Equator. The possible exception might be Komodo, which has attained some measure of notoriety as the habitat of the Komodo dragons, fierce and feral lizards ...
