ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia
A year ago, the president of Ethiopia had his office in a cave.
Today, he sits in a downtown building that resembles a suburban
office complex and tries to create democracy out of an empire on the
verge of falling apart.
"There is total economic and social dislocation," said President
Meles Zenawi. "Things will probably get worse before they get
better."
Meles, 37, spoke in flawless English, the result of his
education at the fashionable Wingate School in Addis Ababa. But he
