Railroad access row threatens parks, trail

CONCORD -- Up New Hampshire's rivers run the railroads that replaced ox carts and boats as the means to get goods and raw materials to urban markets. Now, more than 160 years after the first tracks were laid, fat trucks and interstates have made most of the iron horses obsolete, and tougher environmental laws have made the rivers cleaner than they have been in generations.

But state officials and private landowners alike are finding the railroad rights of way that remain, even where trains no longer run, now form a barrier between New Hampshire residents and their rivers.
