William Gaddis is begging off. He had agreed to write a book review for a small journal. The topic - people who doubt the Holocaust happened - fascinated him. But before long, the man who is called one of America's greatest living novelists discovered he had gathered enough material on the topic to write a book himself, and was getting perilously close to drowning in his data.
