High toxicity is found in harbor mud
|
Toxic chemicals, including arsenic, lead, mercury and PCBs, are
being found in the mud being dredged from the bottom of Boston Harbor
for the Third Harbor Tunnel. The toxicity is so high that the
federal government is refusing to allow the muck to be dumped at sea.
The toxicity has forced state officials, fearful of further delay
in the Third Harbor Tunnel project, to conduct tests aimed at
determining how to neutralize the harmful chemicals. Dredging
stopped late last week, because project managers had no place to put
the mud. It is now aboard five barges at a pier in South Boston.
