Judge ousts pastor from Baptist church

A Brockton Superior Court judge has ousted the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Whitman and returned control of the 115-year-old church to a small group of longtime congregants.

The temporary injunction against the Rev. Michael Fernandez was to remain in effect until a trial settles a dispute over who should run the church. But Fernandez said he will move his congregation to Hanover rather than stay and face a court battle. "I would just as soon leave," said Fernandez, who took over as pastor at First Baptist Church of Whitman in 2005.
