CHRISTINE LAHTI REFUSES TO BE INVISIBLE

Christine Lahti isn't afraid to use the F-word. As in "feminist."
In her life as an actress, feminism has informed most of her
choices, including her two signature roles in the kind of
independent, personal films she has always favored: eccentric aunt
Sylvie in Bill Forsyth's "Housekeeping" and tough-talking Hazel in
Jonathan Demme's "Swing Shift," which netted Lahti an Oscar
nomination as best supporting actress in 1984. Moving behind the
camera to direct her first feature, "My First Mister," which opens
Friday, Lahti continues to be drawn to "movies about disenfranchised
people," she says.
