DINNER TONIGHT CORNISH HENS WITH CABBAGE AND BACON (6 servings)

Jack Frost has been nipping at ears. Santa has been sliding down chimneys. There's no denying it, winter is here and it's definitely comfort-food season.

Luckily, there's a new cookbook that will keep your stew pot busy until the spring thaw. "Soups and Stews" (Food & Wine Books, $25.95) offers plenty of choices for chilly winter evenings, such as this Cornish hen stew.
