HOCKNEY HAS ART AND SCIENCE WORLDS AT ODDS

David Hockney's new book, "Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the
Lost Techniques of the Old Masters," "blows the lid off the art
establishment," according to his publisher, Viking Studio. It's a
grand claim, but so is Hockney's thesis, which has indeed raised
eyebrows in the art world. As long as 600 years ago, the painter-
author maintains, artists were using lenses, curved mirrors, and
other optical devices to help them make paintings. In essence, they
traced from two-dimensional projections created by those devices,
rather than drawing from life.
