NGUYEN VAN THIEU, 78, SOUTH VIETNAM LEADER

Nguyen Van Thieu, the staunchly anticommunist president of South Vietnam whose government collapsed after the agonizing withdrawal of US troops, died in Boston Saturday night after 26 years in exile. He was 78.

Mr. Thieu suffered an apparent stroke on Thursday night at his Foxborough home and fell into a coma. He died at 10:30 p.m. among family members at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, after he was taken off a respirator, said Vietnamese community leaders and a hospital spokesman.
