In the 1950s and '60s a still small voice kept telling Nicholas
Maw, "Don't go there." There, in this instance, was the range of
hermetic styles his professional colleagues had vanished into.
As it turned out, the music he did write was met with puzzlement
or even hostility. What Maw had set about doing was to re-imagine a
kind of music - color-saturated, emotionally generous, technically
demanding - that had been swept away by the modernist upheavals of
the early 20th century.
