NEW YORK - Bob Kerrey is in the back seat of a car stuck in late- afternoon traffic in lower Manhattan. He is, all more or less at once, glancing at the remarks he's to give at the event he's about to be late for; keeping track of what a PR person in the front seat is telling him about the event (a forum on New York City public schools); talking to a reporter seated next to him about the public's love/hate relationship with politicians; and, no doubt, wondering if it wouldn't have been quicker just to walk the 10 blocks from his office.

Such man-in-the-news multitasking leaves Kerrey unfazed. ...
