Martha Stout is to be commended for her sensitive portrayal of those suffering from dissociative identity disorder. Having devoted nearly 20 years to the study and treatment of dissociative disorders, I can attest that it is precisely due to the elusive nature of "shifting" that dissociation remains one of the most seriously misunderstood conditions of our time. However, there is one oversight in her article that I feel compelled to address.
