WORCESTER - Exactly 75 years ago today, on a snow-covered field of
Effie Ward's farm in Auburn, the space age began.
There were no big headlines, and the man who changed the world
that day - Robert Hutchings Goddard - was greeted with far more
skepticism than praise when he launched his 10 1/2-pound rocket.
But Goddard was certain that someday, rockets based on his designs
would take people to the moon, and even to Mars.
Today, more than 40 years since the first satellite left Earth,
the liquid-fueled rockets that originated with Goddard have landed
men on the moon, lifted space stations ...
