Amtrak's new high-speed train, the Acela Express, rode the fast track to the repair yard at the end of its inaugural run Monday night, after maintenance workers found a broken pantograph, the device that draws electricity from overhead cables.

It was an unfortunate coda to an otherwise pleasant first round trip for the fledgling, $20-million luxury train, but it was not the end of Amtrak's Acela troubles.

With repairs to the pantograph still unfinished at dawn yesterday, Acela's northbound trip for the day was left to a Metroliner locomotive, capable of speeds of just 125 miles per hour, 25 ...
