NAXOS AND BIRET: A CLASSICAL CASE OF MUTUAL ADMIRATION

When the budget-priced label Naxos was in its early days, the
presence of the Turkish pianist Idil Biret in its catalog lent some
artistic credibility to the enterprise. As Naxos established itself
in the marketplace, it returned the favor: It gave her a visibility
in the international marketplace that neither decades on the concert
stage nor 30 previous LPs and CDs had achieved. Biret's Naxos Chopin
CDs have sold more than 1 million copies worlwide - that must make
her the best-selling pianist since the prime of Van Cliburn.
