Prosperity Wasn't in the Cards

After operating "Highbrowse," a card and gift shop at 1001 Pennsylvania Ave. NW for seven years, my son and I were forced to close our doors in September 1994 after experiencing huge losses.

As I look around today, I see our fate has been a common one. The following card and gift shops in downtown Washington also have vacated their premises:

Janet's Hallmark at 12th and E streets NW.

Jackie's Hallmark at 17th and K streets NW.

Sheila's Hallmark at 31st and M streets NW.

Frankie's Hallmark at 600 Maryland Ave. SW.

Capital Card and Gift Shop at New Hampshire Avenue and M Street NW.
