NEW BEDFORD TO SUE ON FERRY SERVICE

In the latest salvo in its escalating battle to carry freight and passengers to the islands, the City of New Bedford plans to file suit in US District Court today in a bid to smash the monopoly of the Steamship Authority.

The lawsuit asks the court to allow all federally approved vessels to carry goods, passengers, and vehicles between the mainland and Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, regardless of whether they are licensed by the authority.
