A test during her 18th week of pregnancy determined that the baby Julie Borchard was carrying would be born with Down syndrome.

"I remember being totally shocked," Borchard said of her first pregnancy, four years ago. "And I was very afraid. I didn't even know what Down syndrome was. My doctor advised me only about scheduling a termination. She didn't give me any information on raising a child with Down syndrome."

So Borchard changed doctors, and, in January 1997, she and husband Scott welcomed Noelle into their family. "It was the best decision ever," she said.
