TRAINER MARI HAS A LOT TO SMILE ABOUT

The Boston Globe | August 11, 2000| | Copyright

LAS VEGAS - Johnny Ruiz had just walked off the scales in a fancy ballroom of the Paris Hotel and Gabe Mari, as usual, was in the background. Don King's voice could be heard booming over there and Evander Holyfield's quieter pipes could be heard off to a side, but Mari was quiet.

"Stoney" - Norman Stone - was telling one and all that at least 1,000 and perhaps as many as 2,000 Ruiz fans from Somerville, Methuen, Cambridge, Boston, Chelsea, and other Eastern Massachusetts points would be at the fight to see Chelsea's favorite son. "It's going to be a great night," said Stone, Ruiz's manager.
