BRETTON WOODS, N.H. - Remember when "turn of the century" meant
the 1890s to 1910, part of the "gilded era"? Now here we are again at
the turn of a century in an era that is definitely gilded, even in
New England.
Proof positive is the 200-room Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton
Woods, now graciously welcoming guests for its first winter season.
When originally opened in 1902, this was the largest and last of
dozens of White Mountains grand summer resort hotels. The 20th
