For the last couple of months I have been reading, on and off, the first volume of Victor Klemperer's diary of life during the Nazi regime in Germany. Translated from the German by Martin Chalmers and published under the title "I Will Bear Witness," it spans the years 1933 to 1945. The first volume extends to 1941 (Modern Library, $14.95, paperback); the second, which covers the final four years, will be published here soon (Random House, $25.95).
