Veterans Profit From Rules; Percentage in Federal Jobs Remains High Despite Cuts
|
The percentage of veterans being hired by federal agencies has
increased at a time when the government has cut about 163,000 civil
service jobs, according to a new report on veterans' employment
prepared by the Office of Personnel Management.
As the nation celebrates Veterans Day this weekend, the report
shows the edge that federal personnel laws give veterans in obtaining
a government job and keeping it when agencies lay off workers.
OPM's new figures show that in fiscal 1993 the government hired
43,176 full-time employees, of whom 30.8 percent were veterans. Of
