VATICAN CITY -- Pope John Paul II is preparing to usher in the next millennium with a plea for forgiveness of epic proportions.

Putting the somber theme of repentance at the center of the Vatican's Holy Year 2000 celebrations, the pope may be set to confront head-on some of the uglier chapters of the ancient and not- so-ancient history of the Roman Catholic Church.

Already, John Paul has written that the year of the new millennium should be a time when "the Church kneels before God and implores for forgiveness for the present and past sins of its sons."
