First, there was the word. Then, Johannes Gansfleisch Gutenberg came up with a practical way to spread it. How could a person who earns a living as a purveyor of the printed word not be enamored of that?

Knowledge is power. In the 15th century, Gutenberg, the inventor of moveable type, found a way to give every individual access to it, through the printed word.

Before Gutenberg, woodblock printing was common. A sheet of paper was laid over the inked woodblock, and an impression was taken by rubbing. This was complicated and time-consuming.
