JOSEPH HELLER, 1923-1999 NOVELIST'S `CATCH-22' EPITOMIZED THE ABSURDITY OF WAR

Joseph Heller, whose black-comic novel of World War II, "Catch-
22," contributed an enduring phrase to the English language, died
Sunday at his East Hampton, N.Y., home of a heart attack. He was 76.
"This is a calamity for American letters," Kurt Vonnegut said
yesterday, reacting to news of the death of his friend and fellow
novelist.
"Catch-22," which draws on Mr. Heller's own experiences flying 60
combat missions as an Army Air Force pilot, encapsulated the
absurdity of war in the form of a supposed military edict of that
