An old garden's modern champion

IPSWICH -- The 1655 Whipple House, which is celebrating its centennial this year as one of the country's first house museums, has many lessons to teach -- not the least being how preservationist thinking has changed. In its hundred years of ownership by the Ipswich Historical Society, the old house has been greatly loved, and occasionally violated, by an extraordinary collection of Bay Staters who have become part of its story.

And then there's the garden! It's less than 50 years old, yet its history is just as interesting as that of the 344-year-old house.
