VARIETY IN EARLY MUSIC AT TUFTS

MEDFORD -- The 1999 Amherst Early Music Festival -- occurring this year not at Amherst, but on the Tufts University campus here -- has been a thing of many concerts, another boon, as it happens, to those Bostonians who have keenly felt the shortage of live music-making in these parts in the summer months. Now we are even offered the luxury of choice. What shall it be on Saturday night: the Boston Chamber Music Society's concert at Longy, or, concluding the Amherst's two weeks at Tufts, a performance of the Heinrich Schuetz "Musikalisches Exequien" conducted by Joshua Rifkin?
