SUTTON, Mass. -- Tina Tombs pulled the contraption out of her golf bag and proceeded to set it up on the practice green at the Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Two metal stakes like those used to hold down a tent were each tied at the top by a string. She buried one stake several inches behind the hole, extended the string and put the other stake in the green about eight feet from the hole.
