TV stations set accord on hostage coverage

In an unusual move aimed at limiting the risk during hostage situations, Boston TV stations have quietly negotiated an agreement with Boston and State Police that will restrict live coverage when hostages or armed suspects are involved.

Under a draft of the deal obtained by the Globe, the TV stations agree that they will not "air either critical ground or aerial videotape until after the incident has been resolved." According to Margot Hill, spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department, that means refraining from live broadcasts of footage that could jeopardize a rescue attempt by revealing ...
