FRANZ PFYFFER VON ALTISHOFEN Swiss Guards Commander
Franz Xaver Pfyffer von Altishofen, 77, who from 1972 to 1982 commanded the 100-man Papal Swiss Guards who guard the entrance to Vatican City, died Oct. 27 in Lucerne, Switzerland. The cause of death was not reported.
The Swiss Guards have helped protect the pope since 1506, when Giulio II reportedly was so impressed by the bravery of Alpine mercenaries that he asked them to defend the Vatican.
