Reception for Nagoya museum dampened by injured economy

Now that the long-awaited Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts is finally poised to open next week, there has been a complete reversal of fortune for the two partners.

When the courtship began in 1991, the MFA was at an all-time low, crippled by the recession and splintered by recent layoffs. With attendance shrinking, it faced a $3 million deficit. Meanwhile, the "bubble economy" was booming in Japan. The yen was soaring, and business leaders in Japan's fourth-largest city were eager to pump a percentage of profits into cultural development.
