CASSANDRA WILSON will be at Symphony Hall on Thursday, performing music from her new release, "Traveling Miles" (Blue Note), and demonstrating that, when the subject is Miles Davis, imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Get beyond the cover photo on the CD booklet, where Wilson strikes a pose modeled on a famous Vern Smith photo of the trumpeter, and the album delivers original compositions, fresh ensemble combinations, and quirky arrangements -- a Milesian attitude, if not a precisely Milesian sound.
