Marion Dry is a contralto.

Fifty years ago, or 100, that statement would have seemed neutral, a simple matter of fact. Today it is a little surprising, because few singers choose to identify themselves with the lowest female range, even in England, which loved its contraltos, produced a lot of them, and supported them with a great literature. Human biology hasn't changed, and the contralto voice hasn't disappeared. But many natural contraltos have chosen to push their voices upward into the more glamorous, and higher-paying, territory of the mezzo-soprano.
