`Grace cares." That phrase, uttered by chemical giant W.R. Grace's lead attorney when he addressed a Boston jury in one of the nation's most famous toxic dumping lawsuits, took more than 10 years for the company to live down.

The irony of those words, spoken after Grace had spent years disposing of solvents in a ditch behind its plant in Woburn, enraged residents who believed the chemicals had contaminated town drinking water.
