Following is the first in a series of occasional articles.
Robert F. Walsh never liked the idea of the Long Wharf Marriott,
a veritable brick wall of a structure between the city and its
harbor.
As Boston's chief planner, the director of the Boston
Redevelopment Authority, in the 1970s, Walsh opposed the Marriott in
the name of average Bostonians whose views would be surrendered to
hotel guests.
But Mayor Kevin H. White, prodded by developer friends, overrode
Walsh's objections to the hotel across from Faneuil Hall, and soon
after, Walsh was ousted from the job.
