GIs, Conscientious Objectors and World War II

Having recently participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the American Military Cemetery at Nettuno (near Rome), I found ludicrous Colman McCarthy's Aug. 8 article referring to the service of 1940s conscientious objectors as "at least the equal of" the horrendous challenges so bravely faced by World War II GIs {"War Heroes of Another Sort"}.

Mr. McCarthy claims conscientious objectors were willing to die for their country but weren't willing to kill for it. What an inane statement. In truth, conscientious objectors were neither asked to die for their country nor to kill for it. Rather, ...
