The process of impeaching a president lies in the borderlands between law and politics. The Constitution provides that an impeachment of a president is tried by the Senate, not in a court of law.

The early drafts of the Constitution, back in 1787, provided that articles of impeachment would be heard by the Supreme Court, but the final version called for trial by the Senate, reinforcing the political side of the equation. Article III states that the "trial of all crimes, except in cases of impeachment, shall be by jury."
