SANUR, Indonesia -- Thousands of flag-waving supporters of the opposition paraded yesterday on the tourist island of Bali, where their leader, a daughter of the late President Sukarno, is expected to launch her campaign for the presidency.

Government officials and the military, who had initially tried to ban the gathering, have called for calm. They have voiced concern that violence may arise during a three-day congress of the Indonesian Democratic Party.
